Recycling at Home: 5 Things to Get Started
March 29, 2020At Okon Metals Recycling, we are committed to maintaining and improving the Earth’s environmental stability. Part of moving towards environmental stability is protecting the environment and preserving natural resources. The way to do this is by recycling. What better place to start recycling than at home?
Recycling Bins
The first step to recycling at home is having labeled recycling bins easily accessible in your home. By having the recycling bins nearby, is convenient for you and your family and will help to ease you into your new recycling habit.
Reusable Grocery Bags
In addition to coming in fun patterns and materials, reusable grocery bags won’t get dumped in your local landfill. Many times reusable bags fit more items than your traditional plastic bags, so less is used, and the durability of reusable bags keeps them from ripping. If you forget your bags one week, or you just cannot part with plastic grocery bags, take advantage of the plastic recycling bins many grocery stores offer.
Paperless Billing
Who likes getting bills and bank statements in their mailbox? Nobody. So ditch the paper copies and get your bills and bank statements digitally! This cuts down on the amount of paper being used worldwide, thus lowering energy consumption to make the paper, and you do not have to deal with the hassle of keeping up with a paper bill or bank statement.
Stop Using Plastic Bottles
While convenient, plastic bottles pose a serious danger to wildlife and the environment when thrown away. Instead, purchase a reusable water bottle to use on a daily basis. These often come in different styles and colors so you can choose what works best for you. Additionally, many reusable water bottles are double insulated, so your water, or beverage of choice, stays colder for much longer than a plastic bottle would.
Donate
Most of us have a garage, basement, closet, or spare room stuffed to the max with items we do not use and do not need. Instead of throwing them away, donate them to your local thrift store or shelter! Many dog shelters are in need of donated towels and cleaning supplies, so your donation does not go to waste!
Recycling should not just be an every once in a while thing, recycling should be a way of life. If we want to protect and preserve Earth we need to move towards more sustainable living.
